The island of Sancti Petri, according to historians, was the former site of the famous Temple of Hercules, also called \"Herakleion\", which was one of the most important shrines in the Old World.
The decline of the temple began in the fourth century, finally succumbing to total ruination during the Visigoth period. As a result of the persistent attacks and destruction wrought upon it by various invading armies, erosion caused by the sea and excessive quarrying activities, little by little this sanctuary has all but disappeared.
Currently there is a castle, which is made up of a collection of buildings, which were erected around the end of the 16th century and into the 17th century.
